이번주 내내 전세계에서 한국으로 시선이 집중되었죠.
바로 경주에서 열린 APEC 때문이었는데요.
데일리토끼의 한국어 공부 뉴스레터에서는 벌써 지난주에 APEC 개최지인 경주에 대해서 다뤘어요 (관심있으신 분들은 여기에서 확인해주세요 👉All about 경주! 👑)
APEC은 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation의 약자로 세계 각국의 정상들이 한자리에 모여 경제 협력을 논하는 자리에요. 같은 기간동안 APEC CEO Summit도 함께 열려 엔비디아의 젠슨황 등 전세계 기업의 수장들 역시 모두 경주로 모였어요.
외신보도에서 다뤄진 APEC 관련된 기사들을 함께 살펴보며, 평소에는 잘 접해보지 않았던 (무궁화대훈장이 영어로 뭔지 한번이라도 생각해본적 있으신분...? 저는 처음이었어요! 🤣) 이번 기회에 외교, 정치, 선물공세(??) 관련 영어표현들 함께 공부해봐요 :)
관세와 무역 협정
Business first! 이번 APEC에서는 참여국 정상들 간의 중요한 무역 협정들이 줄줄이 이어졌어요. 한국도 예외는 아니어서 몇달 전 협상했지만 여전히 세부사항을 조율중에 있었던 한미 관세협정도 타결되었어요.
On Wednesday, the two sides agreed on details of the trade agreement (무역 협정), including a cash investment (현금 투자) of $200 billion, capped at (~로 제한되는) $20 billion per year, as a part of the total $350 billion investment plan. The rest will consist of shipbuilding cooperation (조선업 협력). Auto tariffs (자동차 관세) would also be reduced to 15 percent from 25 percent. South Korea faces blanket (포괄적인) 15 percent tariffs (관세) on exports (수출) as a part of the deal reached in July.
💡 'Capped at' 이라는 표현은 상한선/ 최고한도를 제한한다는 의미에요. 머리의 가장 위쪽 부분에 쓰는 모자 (cap) 또는 병의 가장 위쪽을 막아주는 병뚜껑 (cap) 처럼 더 이상 넘어갈 수 없는 상한선을 나타내요.

신라 금관과 무궁화대훈장
한국에서 미국에 보낸 선물공세 역시 화제였는데요, APEC이 경주에서 열린만큼 경주의 상징인 신라 금관과 무궁화대훈장까지! 이번 기회에 영어로 어떻게 표현하는지 함께 살펴볼게요!
The crown (왕관) is a replica (복제품) of those excavated (발굴된) from the Silla kingdom (신라 왕조), which ruled (지배하다) much of the Korean Peninsula (한반도) for nearly 1,000 years until the 10th century and had Gyeongju as its capital (수도). The crowns were believed to have been worn by royals (왕족) and other high-ranking officials (고위 공직자) of Silla, which was known as the “golden kingdom” (황금 왕국) because of its use of gold and vibrant trade (활발한 교역) on the Silk Road.
The official said the crown represents (상징한다) a period of peace and unity (평화와 단결), as the first dynasty (첫번째 왕조) to unify (통일하다) the three kingdoms (삼국) on the peninsula (한반도).
The Grand Order of Mugunghwa (무궁화대훈장) is the highest national order (대한민국 최고 훈장) awarded by South Korea.
The Grand Order of Mugunghwa takes its name from South Korea's national flower (대한민국 국화), the hibiscus (무궁화). The hibiscus is a cultivar native (토종 재배종) to the Korean peninsula and has great cultural significance (문화적 중요성) in Korean history.
치맥 회동
APEC 기간동안 열린 APEC CEO Summit에 참가하기 위해 한국에 방문한 엔비디아의 수장 젠슨황은 한국에 오면 치맥을 꼭 먹어보고 싶어했다고 해요. 그래서 열린 엔비디아-삼성-현대차의 치맥 회동! 치킨집에서 골든벨까지 울렸다고 하는데, 그 자리에 있었던 분들.. 참 부럽네요 🤣
Fried chicken paired with (페어링/ 함께 즐기는) ice-cold (얼음처럼 차가운) draft beer (생맥주), known as “chimaek,” is a must-have (꼭 먹어봐야할/ 필수 코스) for anyone visiting South Korea, and the tech leaders got their fill (충분히 만족했다) at Kkanbu Chicken in the heart of the nation’s capital, ahead of the APEC summit in Gyeongju. As well as being the name of the restaurant chain, “Kkanbu” is a slang word (은어) for a very close friend.
The three ate cheese balls, cheese sticks, boneless chicken and a fried chicken along with Korean beer Terra and the local rice spirit (쌀 증류주) soju.
Video from local news outlets showed the trio (세 사람) – combined net worth (총 자산 합계) $195 billion – linking their drinking arms (술잔을 든 팔을 교차/ 우정주🫶) to take a shot of beer, a gesture that, in South Korea, cements (굳게 하다 - 시멘트의 동사형이에요!) friendship while drinking. (우정은 함께 마시며 크는거라고 하죠? 😉)
When Huang rang the “golden bell,” (골든벨을 울렸다 - 영어에는 없는 표현이에요!) a gesture to pay the bill for everyone (모두를 위해 결제하다) in the restaurant, people cheered (환호하다) — though Samsung’s Lee paid the bill and Chung paid for a second round.
💡 'Get someone's fill' 이라는 표현은 충분히 먹다/마시다라는 의미에요. '무언가를 가득 채우다'라는 뜻의 'fill'을 사용해서 배가 빵빵하게 가득 채우다라는 뜻으로 확장됐어요. 😋
💡 골든벨이 영어라서 왠지 영어표현인 것 같은 '골든벨을 울렸다'는 표현 - 사실은 영어에는 없는 표현이랍니다! 영어로는 "Next round is on me, everyone!" (다음 잔은 제가 쏠게요!!) 라고 외쳐보세요! 🤑
